The NHL’s New York Islanders were struggling. After winning four straight Stanley Cups in the 1980s, the Islanders suffered an embarrassing sweep by their rivals, the New York Rangers, in the first round of the 1994 playoffs. Hoping for a new start, the Islanders swapped out their logo for a cartoon fisherman gripping a hockey stick, which immediately drew comparisons to the mascot for Gorton’s frozen seafood, causing opposing fans to taunt the team with chants of “We want fish sticks!”

Join author Nicholas Hirshon for an author talk and book signing as he examines this period of intense change in the team’s history.
