Grossman is a full professor of journalism at the State University of New York/College at Old Westbury, teaching there for 41 years. As a member with his family of the Jewish Center of the Hamptons in East Hampton, he met regularly with noted architect Norman Jaffe and benefactor Evan Frankel working to put into words Jaffe’s concept for the “Gates of the Grove” sanctuary so members of the congregation could understand Jaffe’s extraordinary vision. Grossman’s paternal grandparents, Herman and Stephanie, settled in Sag Harbor more than a century ago. Herman, a skilled engraver, came to the United States from Hungary and worked at Fahys’ watchcase factory in Sag Harbor.
Grossman is the author of six books.
For 28 years, he has hosted the nationally-aired television program “Enviro Close-Up with Karl Grossman” and, on Long Island, he is host of the TV show “Environment Long Island” produced by LTV in Wainscott. The East Hampton Library houses the Karl Grossman Research Archive, the digitized collection of Grossman’s journalism since he began as a Long Island-based reporter in 1962. His weekly column started at the daily Long Island Press in 1969 and now appears in The East Hampton Press, The Southampton Press, The Sag Harbor Express and Shelter Island Reporter, among other newspapers, and on news websites. He has been long active in Jewish journalism writing for the Long Island Jewish World, Manhattan Jewish Sentinel and Jewish Tribune, and he has a blog on The Times of Israel in Jerusalem. Grossman has received many awards for journalism including the George Polk Award. He founded and was the first president of the Press Club of Long Island.
